De poort werd gebouwd in de 13e-14e eeuw, en in 1334 was deze voorzien van een ophaalbrug die een slotgracht overspande. Het werd niet veel gebruikt tot 1674, toen de lange Portico di San Luca werd gebouwd van het centrum van de stad naar de Basilica della Beata Vergine di San Luca, die werd gebruikt in de jaarlijkse processie van een icoon. Vanaf dat moment stond het ook bekend als de “Porta Sacra” of de “Porta dei pellegrini” vanwege de locatie op de route naar het Heiligdom van San Luca.
