El banco se creó el 1 de agosto de 1992 a partir de la fusión del Volksbank Brixen, fundado en 1889, y el Volksbank Bozen, fundado en 1902. En 1995, se llevó a cabo la adquisición del Volksbank Meran, fundado en 1886. En octubre de 2014, los consejos de administración del Südtiroler Volksbank y la Banca Popolare di Marostica llegaron a un acuerdo sobre un proyecto de fusión, que fue aprobado en febrero de 2015 por los miembros de ambos bancos y entró en vigor el 1 de abril de 2015.
