El Istituto Arcivescovile Paritario Santa Caterina ha sido el centro de cultura y formación de la Iglesia pisana durante más de dos siglos. Hoy alberga el Seminario, el Instituto Superior de Ciencias Religiosas "Noccolò Stenone", la Escuela de Formación Teológica, el Instituto Integral y la Escuela Secundaria Científica, así como la Pensión Universitaria "G. Toniolo". En el instituto se realizan conferencias y congresos, exposiciones y presentaciones de libros y se pone a disposición del público la prestigiosa biblioteca Cathariniana, que tiene su sede aquí, aunque en diferentes salas, desde el siglo XIII, cuando el conjunto edificatorio albergaba el convento de los dominicos. Hoy conserva manuscritos, incunables y más de 50.000 volúmenes, desde el siglo XVI hasta obras contemporáneas.
