L'Istituto Arcivescovile Paritario Santa Caterina è da oltre due secoli centro di cultura e formazione della Chiesa Pisana. Oggi ospita il Seminario, l'Istituto Superiore di Scienze Religiose "Noccolò Stenone", la Scuola di Formazione Teologica, l'Istituto Comprensivo e il Liceo Scientifico, nonché la Pensione Universitaria "G. Toniolo". Nell'istituto si tengono conferenze e congressi, mostre e presentazioni di libri ed è messa a disposizione del pubblico la prestigiosa Biblioteca Cathariniana, che qui ha sede, seppur in sale diverse, sin dal Duecento, quando il complesso edilizio ospitò il monastero domenicano. Oggi conserva manoscritti, incunaboli e oltre 50.000 volumi, dal Cinquecento ad opere contemporanee.
