El Wijde Aa al norte de Zwolle es un lago recreativo que fue creado por la extracción de arena para la construcción de la zona residencial subyacente de Aa-landen. El nombre se deriva del río Aa, del cual el Westerveldse Aa es el único trozo de agua abierta que queda. Originalmente, el lago era más pequeño y se conocía como De Kolk van Helderlicht, nombrado así en honor a la granja del mismo nombre que se encuentra junto al lago (ahora centro creativo Inside Out). La granja Helderlicht ya se menciona en mapas de Overijssel desde principios del siglo XIX.
