De Wijde Aa ten noorden van Zwolle is een recreatieplas die is ontstaan door zandwinning voor de aanleg van de achterliggend woonwijk de Aa-landen. De naam is afgeleid van het riviertje de Aa, waarvan de Westerveldse Aa het enige overgebleven stuk open water is. Oorspronkelijk was de plas kleiner, en stond bekend als De Kolk van Helderlicht, genoemd naar de gelijknamige boerderij die naast de plas staat (nu creatief centrum Inside Out). De boerderij Helderlicht staat reeds vermeld op kaarten van Overijssel uit begin 1800.
