Il Wijde Aa a nord di Zwolle è un lago ricreativo che è stato creato per l'estrazione di sabbia per la costruzione dell'area residenziale sottostante, gli Aa-landen. Il nome deriva dal fiume Aa, di cui l'Westerveldse Aa è l'unico pezzo rimasto di acqua aperta. Inizialmente il lago era più piccolo e era conosciuto come De Kolk van Helderlicht, nome preso dalla fattoria omonima che si trova accanto al lago (ora centro creativo Inside Out). La fattoria Helderlicht è già menzionata nelle mappe dell'Overijssel dei primi anni 1800.
