El matemático y científico Daniel Bernoulli nació en la ciudad de Groningen, en el lugar donde actualmente se encuentra la Biblioteca Pública, como hijo de Johan Bernoulli. Estudió medicina y se trasladó en 1725 a la recién fundada academia de San Petersburgo, donde trabajó muy de cerca con Leonhard Euler durante seis años. Daniel Bernoulli es el primer autor que intentó establecer una teoría cinética de los gases. Aplicó esta teoría para dar una explicación a la ley de Boyle. Junto con Leonhard Euler, trabajó en problemas relacionados con la elasticidad y el desarrollo de la ecuación de vigas de Euler-Bernoulli. Su principio de Bernoulli es de gran importancia en la aerodinámica.
