Joseph Meens fundó en 1870 en el barrio Thull cerca de Schinnen la cervecería Meens. La cervecería se combinó con una granja. La elaboración de cerveza y la venta de bagazo proporcionaron un mejor ingreso. Aunque el año de fundación sugiere que desde el principio se estaba elaborando, inicialmente se producían cervezas de alta fermentación, alrededor del cambio de siglo la cervecería cambió a la cerveza 'Bávara', cerveza de fermentación baja. Hasta 1960, la cerveza Alfa solo se consumía en la zona. Después se hizo disponible en toda Holanda.
