Contrario a lo que sugiere el término estanque, el Hofvijver es originariamente un lago natural en una duna, por donde fluían el Haagse Beek (originalmente: Duinbeek) y el actualmente desviado Bosbeek del Bosque de La Haya. El Beek todavía lo hace hoy en día y así el estanque está conectado con las dunas en Kijkduin. En este lago de duna había una islita (no la isla actual) donde el conde Guillermo II de Holanda construyó su castillo en el siglo XIII. Según otras fuentes, construyó su castillo al lado del estanque y mandó excavar un foso alrededor. En este siglo también se profundizó el lago.
