Contrariamente a quanto suggerisce il termine stagno, l'Hofvijver è originariamente un lago naturale su cui sfociavano il Haagse Beek (originariamente: Duinbeek) e il Bosbeek, oggi interrato, provenienti dal Haagse Bos. Il Beek continua a farlo anche oggi e così lo stagno è in collegamento con le dune di Kijkduin. In questo lago dunoso si trovava un'isoletta (non l'attuale isolotto) su cui il conte Guglielmo II di Olanda costruì il suo castello nel XIII secolo. Secondo altre fonti, costruì il suo castello accanto allo stagno e fece scavare un fossato intorno. In questo secolo il lago fu anche approfondito.
