La planta de bombeo ir. D.F. Woudagemaal es la más grande del mundo que aún está en funcionamiento. En 1998 fue incluida en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO. Ha estado activa desde el 7 de octubre de 1920.
Después del cierre de Lauwerszee en 1969, se formó el Lauwersmeer con las esclusas de desagüe en Lauwersoog. Estos dos factores han contribuido enormemente a que el Woudagemaal haya tenido que bombear mucho menos desde entonces. Pero en la primavera de 2002, el Woudagemaal funcionó durante diez días seguidos.
