La station de pompage ir. D.F. Woudagemaal est la plus grande pompe à vapeur encore en opération au monde. En 1998, il a été inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Il est actif depuis le 7 octobre 1920.
Après la fermeture de la Lauwerszee en 1969, le Lauwersmeer est né avec les écluses d'évacuation à Lauwersoog. Ces deux facteurs ont fortement contribué au fait que le Woudagemaal a depuis lors dû pomper beaucoup moins souvent. Mais au printemps 2002, le Woudagemaal a tout de même fonctionné pendant dix jours d'affilée.
