The ir. D.F. Woudagemaal is the largest steam pump station in the world that is still in operation. In 1998, it was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It has been active since October 7, 1920.
After the closure of Lauwerszee in 1969, the Lauwersmeer was created with the outflow sluices at Lauwersoog. These two factors have significantly contributed to the fact that the Woudagemaal has had to pump considerably less often since then. However, in the spring of 2002, the Woudagemaal operated continuously for ten days.
