La Broerekerk fue construida en el siglo XIII como iglesia conventual de los Hermanos Menores. Después de la revuelta de las imágenes, la iglesia pasó a manos reformistas en 1578, y luego se demolieron los edificios monásticos abandonados. Como iglesia reformada, sirvió hasta 1970. La iglesia de tres naves sin torre es una ruina como resultado de un incendio el 8 de mayo de 1980. En 1986, la iglesia fue abierta al público. El edificio más antiguo de Bolsward recibió en 2006 una cubierta de vidrio, diseñada por el arquitecto Jelle de Jong. El edificio es un monumento nacional.
