La Broerekerk fu costruita nel XIII secolo come chiesa monastica dei Frati Minori. Dopo l'iconoclastia, la chiesa passò in mani riformate nel 1578, dopodiché gli edifici del monastero abbandonati furono demoliti. Come chiesa riformata, ha funzione fino al 1970. La chiesa a tre navate senza campanile è una rovina a causa di un incendio l'8 maggio 1980. Nel 1986 la chiesa fu aperta al pubblico. L'edificio più antico di Bolsward ricevette nel 2006 una copertura in vetro, progettata dall'architetto Jelle de Jong. L'edificio è un monumento nazionale.
