En este sitio se encontraba el Castellum Matilo romano a partir del 70 d.C., habitado por guarniciones durante más de 200 años. Ubicado estratégicamente en la conexión del río Rin y el canal Corbulo. Este canal conectaba el río Rin con el río Mosa, permitiendo la conexión sin necesidad de ir por mar.
Después del Castellum Matilo, se construyó en el sitio una granja/castillo fortificado y un monasterio (convento de Santa Margarita).
El parque intenta hacer revivir parte de esa historia.
