À cet endroit se trouvait le Castellum Matilo romain à partir de 70 après J.-C., habité par des garnisons pendant plus de 200 ans. Situé stratégiquement à la confluence du Rhin et du canal Corbulo. Ce canal reliait le Rhin et la Meuse, permettant une connexion sans avoir besoin de passer par la mer.
Après le Castellum Matilo, le site a été construit avec une ferme/castle fortifiée et un monastère (convent de Sainte Marguerite).
Le parc tente de faire revivre une partie de cette histoire.
