In questo sito si trovava il Castellum Matilo romano dal 70 d.C., abitato da guarnigioni per oltre 200 anni. Situato strategicamente al punto di connessione tra il fiume Reno e il canale Corbulo. Questo canale collegava il fiume Reno e il fiume Mosa, consentendo un collegamento senza la necessità di passare per mare.
Dopo il Castellum Matilo, il sito è stato costruito con una fattoria/castello fortificato e un monastero (monastero di Santa Margherita).
Il parco cerca di far rivivere un po' di quella storia.
