På dette sted lå det romerske Castellum Matilo fra 70 e.Kr., beboet af garnisoner i over 200 år. Strategisk placeret ved forbindelsen af floden Rhin og Corbulo-kanalen. Denne kanal forbandt floden Rhin og floden Maas, hvilket gjorde det muligt at forbinde uden behov for at sejle over havet.
Efter Castellum Matilo blev stedet bygget med en befæstet gård/borg og et kloster (St. Margarethakonvent).
Parc forsøger at lade noget af denne historie genoplive.
