Se encuentra al este de Dokkum, entre Metslawier/Jouswier y Engwierum. El núcleo del pueblo se sitúa en la N358, justo al norte del Dokkumergrootdiep. A través del Eesteropvaart también está conectado con la Zuider Ee. Ee es el nombre de lugar más corto en los Países Bajos, siendo el único que tiene solo dos letras. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 850 habitantes. También se incluyen en el municipio las aldeas de Brandeburen, Dijkshorne, Groot Medhuizen, Klein Medhuizen, Oudeterp, Steenvak y Tibma.
