Ya en tiempos romanos había un asentamiento aquí llamado Caspingium, que estaba situado en el heerweg del sur (camino para el ejército) entre Noviomagus (Nimega) y Lugdunum Batavorum (Katwijk). Se han encontrado bastantes hallazgos romanos en y alrededor de Asperen.
Alrededor de 1314, Asperen recibió derechos de ciudad.
Al norte de Asperen, a lo largo del Linge, se encuentra la rueda del Galgenwiel. Una rueda es un charco profundo que se creó durante una ruptura de dique.
