Es una colonia de turba, que surgió a finales del siglo XIX en Middenraai. Gracias a la construcción a pequeña escala, ha obtenido un propio núcleo del pueblo. Una parte del núcleo del pueblo está formada por el parque de bungalows De Breistroeken. El pueblo cuenta con una iglesia reformada neerlandesa y una iglesia cristiana reformada. Además, hay campos deportivos para el club de fútbol SV Nieuw Balinge, varias asociaciones y una escuela primaria pública.
El nuevo horario del transporte en autobús de Qbuzz entrará en vigor el domingo 11 de diciembre de 2022. Eso significa que a partir de esa fecha, la Línea 37 entre Hoogeveen y Westerbork será suprimida. Las aldeas Balinge, Mantinge y Nieuw Balinge se quedan ahora sin transporte público.
