Se encuentra aproximadamente a 13 kilómetros al noreste de Leeuwarden. Oenkerk es originariamente el pueblo central de la región de Trijnwouden. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 1.995 habitantes. Oenkerk se mencionó por primera vez en 1408, como Ontzerka. En 1486-1487 se mencionó como oentzercka, en 1502 como Oenzerka, en 1579 como Oentzierck y a partir de 1786 aparece la escritura Oenkerk. El nombre del lugar probablemente se refiere al propietario o fundador de la iglesia que pudo haber sido llamado Oene.
