Det ligger cirka 13 kilometer nordøst for Leeuwarden. Oenkerk er oprindeligt den mellemste landsby i området Trijnwouden. I 2021 havde landsbyen 1.995 indbyggere. Oenkerk blev første gang nævnt i 1408 som Ontzerka. I 1486-1487 blev det nævnt som oentzercka, i 1502 som Oenzerka, i 1579 som Oentzierck og fra 1786 findes stavemåden Oenkerk. Stednavnet henviser sandsynligvis til ejeren eller grundlæggeren af kirken, der skulle have heddet Oene.
