Es liegt etwa 13 Kilometer nordöstlich von Leeuwarden. Oenkerk ist ursprünglich das mittlere Dorf in der Region Trijnwouden. Im Jahr 2021 hatte das Dorf 1.995 Einwohner. Oenkerk wurde 1408 erstmals erwähnt, als Ontzerka. 1486-1487 wurde es als oentzercka erwähnt, 1502 als Oenzerka, 1579 als Oentzierck und ab 1786 tritt die Schreibweise Oenkerk auf. Der Ortsname weist wahrscheinlich auf den Eigentümer oder Gründer der Kirche hin, der Oene geheißen haben könnte.
