Probablemente la región donde se encuentra el pueblo ya estaba habitada desde la prehistoria. Cuando en el siglo XVII comienzan las extracciones de turba en Hoogeveen y sus alrededores, Stuifzand es un lugar donde solo viven furtivos y bucaneros. Solo a mediados del siglo XIX, Stuifzand es incorporado al municipio de Ruinen y llega un maestro a vivir en el pueblo.
