Wahrscheinlich war die Region, in der das Dorf liegt, bereits in der Urzeit bewohnt. Als im 17. Jahrhundert die Torfabbau in Hoogeveen und Umgebung beginnt, ist Stuifzand ein Ort, an dem nur Wilderer und Freibeuter leben. Erst in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wird Stuifzand in die Gemeinde Ruinen eingegliedert und ein Lehrer zieht ins Dorf.
