Probably the area where the village is located has been inhabited since prehistoric times. When peat excavations in Hoogeveen and the surrounding area begin in the 17th century, Stuifzand is a place where only poachers and freebooters live. It is only in the mid-19th century that Stuifzand is incorporated into the municipality of Ruinen and a teacher moves to the village.
