Sandsynligt var området, hvor landsbyen ligger, allerede beboet i forhistorisk tid. Da tørvegravningen i Hoogeveen og omegn begynder i det 17. århundrede, er Stuifzand et sted, hvor kun trofæjægere og fribyttere bor. Først i midten af det 19. århundrede bliver Stuifzand en del af kommunen Ruinen, og der kommer en lærer til at bo i landsbyen.
