Noord-Sleen se encuentra al norte del pueblo de Sleen, que anteriormente también se conocía como Zuid-Sleen. Sin embargo, 'Zuid-Sleen' se ha desarrollado hasta convertirse en la aldea principal del antiguo municipio de Sleen, que se fusionó el 1 de enero de 1998 con el municipio de Coevorden. Las excavaciones en el suelo permiten inferir que ya había asentamientos en Noord-Sleen mucho antes de la era cristiana, como lo demuestran también los túmulos funerarios en la Hunebedweg al norte de la Zweeloërstraat.
