Noord-Sleen ligt ten noorden van het dorp Sleen, dat vroeger ook wel Zuid-Sleen werd genoemd. 'Zuid-Sleen' heeft zich echter ontwikkeld tot het hoofddorp van de voormalige gemeente Sleen, die op 1 januari 1998 opging in de gemeente Coevorden. Uit bodemvondsten mag worden afgeleid dat in Noord-Sleen reeds ver voor de jaartelling bewoning is geweest, getuige ook de hunebedden aan de Hunebedweg ten noorden van de Zweeloërstraat.
