Se encuentra al sureste de Stiens y al norte de la ciudad de Leeuwarden. El núcleo del pueblo está al este de la N357. A lo largo y en la zona del pueblo fluyen el Stienservaart y De Joussen. A la orilla del Stienervaart hay un puerto. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 950 habitantes. Britsum colabora en muchos frentes con las aldeas de Cornjum y Jelsum, situadas al suroeste.
