La sismología es una disciplina científica dentro de la geofísica que se ocupa del estudio, descripción y medición de las ondas sísmicas en los terremotos. En 1993 se construyó y puso en funcionamiento la estación sísmica subterránea HGN (Heimansgroeve) en el tranquilo valle de Geuldal, cerca de Heimansgroeve. El edificio de más de 7 metros de profundidad está cimentado sobre la dura roca del Carbonífero, lo que permite que las registraciones sufran poco impacto de ruido de fondo, como el viento y el tráfico. La estación HGN forma parte de la red mundial de sismómetros cuyos datos se intercambian con centros sismológicos internacionales.
