La sismologia è una disciplina scientifica all'interno della geofisica che si occupa di studiare, descrivere e misurare le onde sismiche durante i terremoti.
Nel 1993 è stata costruita e messa in funzione la stazione sismica sotterranea HGN (Heimansgroeve) nella tranquilla valle di Geuldal presso Heimansgroeve. L'edificio, profondo oltre 7 metri, è fondato sulla dura roccia carbonifera, il che consente alle registrazioni di subire poche interferenze da rumori di fondo, come vento e traffico.
La stazione HGN fa parte della rete globale di sismometri i cui dati vengono scambiati con i centri sismologici internazionali.
