El molino se encuentra en el bastión original de la muralla norte de la ciudad de Rhenen, donde había estado un molino durante siglos. El nombre del molino proviene de su ubicación: dentro de la muralla. La construcción del molino actual coincidió con la demolición de la muralla en 1803. Hasta el año 1934, el molino se utilizó para moler grano. El apodo 'Molino Panorama' es lógico, porque se puede disfrutar de una hermosa vista de la ciudad y del Rin desde el molino. Una bala de cañón hizo un agujero en el casco del molino durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y este agujero se convirtió más tarde en una ventana redonda.
