El Verlaat de Woerden es una esclusa construida en la Grecht.
La Grecht es un canal entre el Oude Rijn y el Kromme Mijdrecht. La Grecht fue excavada a finales del siglo XIV y servía para el drenaje de las tierras de pólder circundantes, pero también se utilizaba para la navegación.
Una esclusa (o verlaat) es una obra de ingeniería hidráulica que permite llevar barcos de un nivel de agua a otro. Un barco puede ser elevado o descendido mediante ella, respectivamente. Una esclusa consta de un pozo de esclusa o cámara de esclusa con una puerta de esclusa a cada lado.
