Het Woerdense Verlaat is een in de Grecht gebouwde schutsluis.
De Grecht is een wetering tussen de Oude Rijn en de Kromme Mijdrecht. De Grecht werd aan het einde van de 14e eeuw gegraven en diende voor de ontwatering van het omringende polderland, maar werd ook voor de scheepvaart gebruikt.
Een schutsluis (of verlaat) is een waterbouwkundig kunstwerk dat het mogelijk maakt om schepen van het ene naar het andere waterpeil te brengen. Een schip kan ermee worden opgeschut of afgeschut, respectievelijk omhoog of omlaag. Een schutsluis bestaat uit een schutkolk of sluiskolk met aan beide zijden een sluisdeur.
