Le Woerdense Verlaat est une écluse construite dans la Grecht.
La Grecht est un canal entre l'Oude Rijn et le Kromme Mijdrecht. La Grecht a été creusée à la fin du 14e siècle et servait à drainer les terres environnantes, mais était également utilisée pour la navigation.
Une écluse (ou verlaat) est une construction hydraulique qui permet de déplacer des navires d'un niveau d'eau à un autre. Un bateau peut y être monté ou descendu, respectivement vers le haut ou vers le bas. Une écluse se compose d'une chambre d'écluse ou d'un bassin d'écluse avec une porte d'écluse de chaque côté.
