Oud-Geleen es una parte histórica del distrito de Geleen. Ya en torno al 5,000 a.C. la gente vivía en (Vieja) Geleen. Esto lo convierte en una de las áreas habitadas más antiguas de los Países Bajos. El centro de Oud-Geleen es la iglesia, que fue fundada en tiempos carolingios (800-850). La actual torre de la iglesia es el monumento más antiguo de Geleen y fue construida en 1504.
La llegada de la mina estatal de Maurits y su puesta en marcha oficial en 1925 también significó una gran revolución para Oud-Geleen. Por primera vez, muchas personas ajenas comenzaron a vivir en la zona y no estaban acostumbradas a eso. Oud-Geleen es y sigue siendo un distrito con una apariencia que es única en muchos aspectos.
