Oud-Geleen est une partie historique du district de Geleen. Dès 5000 av. J.-C., des personnes vivaient à (Vieux) Geleen. Cela en fait l'une des zones habitées les plus anciennes des Pays-Bas. Le centre d'Oud-Geleen est l'église, qui a été fondée à l'époque carolingienne (800-850). Le clocher actuel est le plus ancien monument de Geleen et a été construit en 1504.
L'arrivée de la mine d'État de Maurits et sa mise en service officielle en 1925 ont également marqué une grande révolution pour Oud-Geleen. Pour la première fois, de nombreux étrangers sont venus vivre dans la région et ils n'y étaient pas habitués. Oud-Geleen est et reste un quartier avec une apparence unique à bien des égards.
