En la línea de ferrocarril Maarssen-Utrecht, el científico Christophe Buys Ballot realizó experimentos sobre el efecto Doppler el 3 de junio de 1845 (el efecto que hace que las notas altas se reduzcan cuando son emitidas desde un vehículo que pasa). Colocó a varios trompetistas en el tren para que emitieran un tono constante. Las observaciones a lo largo de la vía debían escuchar cuánto había de diferencia de tono al pasar. Doppler había calculado que a 70 km/h un b sonaría medio tono más alto (como un c).
El experimento fracasó debido a la falta de mantenimiento de un tono constante, la velocidad variable del tren y la dificultad de escuchar debido al ruido del tren.
