En 1623 se construyó el Polder Negro. Este polder se inundó en 1802. Aquí el área debe su nombre a la Polder Negra Ahogada. La tierra que se perdió nunca más se volvió a inundar por completo. El agua del mar que entra y sale formó cauces en los antiguos campos y depositó arcilla y sedimentos. Aquí se ha formado un alto terreno de marismas. A causa de la arena que vuela, se han formado dunas que delimitan el área en el lado del mar. Recientemente, se ahondó el canal de slufter y con la arena extraída se han creado nuevas dunas en la zona de nuevo a la naturaleza, más al oeste, llamada el Polder Negro Rehabilitado. El área se ha diseñado en el marco del desarrollo de la naturaleza.
