Anteriormente conocido como el Hotel Viking, más tarde como Hotel Royal Christiania, el edificio fue diseñado por los arquitectos Knut Knutsen y Fredrik Winsnes, por lo que recibieron el Premio de la Fundación Houen en 1961. El hotel fue financiado y construido por el Municipio de Oslo para acoger los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno de 1952.
En el momento de su apertura formal el 10 de diciembre de 1951, era el hotel más grande de Escandinavia. Hoy en día, el hotel sigue siendo uno de los más grandes de Noruega, con 810 habitaciones y 24 salas de conferencias, y ahora es propiedad de Nordic Choice Hotels. El hotel ha sido ampliado varias veces y se reabre en marzo de 2019.
