In passato conosciuto come Hotel Viking, poi come Hotel Royal Christiania, l'edificio è stato progettato dagli architetti Knut Knutsen e Fredrik Winsnes, per il quale hanno ricevuto il Premio della Fondazione Houen nel 1961. L'hotel è stato finanziato e costruito dal Comune di Oslo per accogliere le Olimpiadi invernali del 1952.
Al momento della sua inaugurazione ufficiale il 10 dicembre 1951, era il più grande hotel della Scandinavia. Oggi, l'hotel rimane uno dei più grandi in Norvegia, con 810 camere e 24 sale conferenze, ed è ora di proprietà di Nordic Choice Hotels. L'hotel è stato ampliato più volte e riapre nel marzo 2019.
