La antigua Diócesis Católica de Stavanger en Noruega incluía los modernos condados de Rogaland y Agder, junto con las regiones de Valdres y Hallingdal y las parroquias de Eidfjord y Røldal de Hordaland. Existió desde principios del siglo XII hasta la Reforma Protestante.
El obispado se formó a principios del siglo XII a partir de la porción sur de la Diócesis de Bergen, que hasta entonces había incluido toda Noruega Occidental. Reinald, un inglés y muy probablemente un monje benedictino de la Catedral de Winchester, fue el primer Obispo de Stavanger. Con el dinero que le dio en 1128 el rey Sigurd Jorsalefarer, por permitir que ese monarca se casara con una Cecilia durante la vida de su consorte, la reina Malmfrid, Reinald comenzó la catedral y fundó el cabildo. Fue ahorcado en Bergen en 1135 por el rey Harald Gille tras negarse a pagar quince marcas de oro a ese monarca, quien lo sospechaba de ocultar los tesoros pertenecientes al rey Magnus IV de Noruega.
