Francisco Martins Sarmento nació en Guimarães en 1833. Hombre de razonable fortuna, dedicó su tiempo a investigar los orígenes de la tierra que le dio su ser y se distinguió como arqueólogo y etnólogo , dedicándose a supervisar excavaciones y a estudiar la Citânia de Briteiros y el Castro de Sabroso.
Murió en Guimarães en 1899, y fue el día inmediatamente después de su muerte cuando el Ayuntamiento de Guimarães decidió bautizar esta plaza como Largo de Martins Sarmento.
