La fuente fue construida entre 1551 y 1553 bajo la dirección del célebre cantero João Lopes, o Velho en el estilo característico de las fuentes públicas del noroeste de la Península Ibérica que él introdujo.
El Chafariz do Terreiro es una impresionante fuente renacentista en la Praça do Conselheiro Silva Torres.
La fuente consta de tres cuencos superpuestos de tamaño creciente, colocados sobre una columna central de diseño piramidal . La decoración combina motivos geométricos con figuras mitológicas , típicas del estilo renacentista de la época. La fuente se sitúa sobre una plataforma circular, rodeada por una balaustrada de hierro.
