Fontænen blev bygget mellem 1551 og 1553 under ledelse af den berømte stenhugger João Lopes, også kendt som Velho, i den karakteristiske stil for offentlige fontæner i den nordvestlige del af den Iberiske Halvø, som han introducerede.
