The fountain was built between 1551 and 1553 under the direction of the renowned stonemason João Lopes, o Velho in the characteristic style of public fountains in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula that he introduced.
The Chafariz do Terreiro is a striking Renaissance fountain in the Praça do Conselheiro Silva Torres square.
The fountain consists of three superimposed bowls of increasing size, placed on a central column with a pyramidal design . The decoration combines geometric patterns with mythological figures , which is typical of the Renaissance style of that period. The fountain is placed on a circular platform, surrounded by an iron balustrade.
